Tennis and Charity for Moldovans

Denis is 16-years-old and lives in Chişinău. Like so many children in Moldova today, both of his parents have gone abroad in search of work, leaving him and his twin sister behind. Yet Denis has cerebral palsy and is just one of the thousands of disabled children who have slipped through the net of the country’s nascent public healthcare system. He was unable to walk until he was three-years-old and is currently looked after by his sister, yet thanks to the tireless efforts of the British author and comedian Tony Hawks and the Hippocrates Centre, the quality of Denis’ life, like the hundreds of other children who have visited the clinic, has been drastically improved.

Money for Distressed People in Two Accounts

Ever since the government starting collecting money for those affected by the recent floods, everyday, in a special account opened by the Ministry of Finance, over one million lei has been donated. Yet at the same time and for the same purpose, the Ministry of Construction and Territorial Development also announced that it has opened a bank account for victims of the floods. Even though the means and methods for giving out this money have not yet been decided, the authorities affirm that this process will be open and fair, yet some experts doubt this and suspect that the government will not miss out on an opportunity to create a positive pre-election image for itself.

A Case of Theft Investigated for 10 years

The man contacted the police, hoping his losses would be recovered, and the burglar caught yet… the expectations of Valcu have so far not been met. Material interests, he said, are above the law.

British Deputy Head of Mission Visits Ziarul de Gardă

Last week the British Deputy Head of Mission, HMA John Mitchell, took time out of his busy schedule to visit the offices of Ziarul de Gardă.

Arriving from the British Embassy in Chişinău, Mr Mitchell met with reporters from Ziarul de Gardă, including Briton Mark Gilbey, to discuss over coffee a variety of topics, including corruption, British-Moldovan relations and about life in Moldova.

Files From Stalinist Times Subjected to “an Illegal Law”

The Ministry Tries to Find Solutions, Patients Try to Find Beds

While the Ministry of Health (MS) asserts there is no need to open new hospitals for tuberculosis patients, some suffers of the illness have been waiting weeks for a bed. Whilst in the northern and central districts it is easy for people with TB to find a bed, in the south this is not the case and patients are forced to treat themselves at home, posing a threat to their families.
